Paolo Giancola (Monopoli, 1910-1975) nicknamed Paolo Picasso - Art forger of 20th Century great Masters | 2001® |
Public intervention in the city of liege(B) and at the MAMAC Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain de Liège | Posters and Digital print on canvas. Size: 180x210cm | in 1975 one of the legendary italian art forgers died at the age of 71. he worked for over two decades between the 1940's and 1960's to produce some of the most perfect replicas of his century masters. besides being a very sophisticated painter, his most admirable skill consisted in that of being an excellent art dealer. during the 25 years of his well organized activity he created such a confusion in the european art market that even to these days well renowned collectors are still wondering whether what they own in their art stocks is of any value at all. Once arrested by the police of finances of italy in 1967 he pleaded guilty but during confessions he justified his illegal activity by saying that what he intended to do with this illegal business was also trying to encourage more people to love the arts and to bring the burgeous of his time to invest more money in the arts and culture. - (This man was my grand father).
